The MORE project has published a new policy brief exploring the impact of EU Returns and Readmissions (R&R) policies across eight countries: Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
The research shows that enforcement-centred approaches can leave migrants in prolonged legal insecurity and contribute to destitution, poor health, labour exploitation and social exclusion.
At the same time, alternatives to return are already being used across Europe and the UK. These include regularisation, local inclusion initiatives and cooperation between public authorities and civil society.
The policy brief identifies regularisation as a key alternative, while stressing that it works best when combined with social inclusion measures and cooperation at different levels.
